13 Control Flow
Control flow refers to the order in which individual statements, instructions, or function calls are executed or evaluated. In other words, not all code is executed. Sometimes code is only reached under certain conditions, and some code may never be reached or executed.
It’s essential to understand that Python relies heavily on indentation to define the structure and flow of the code. This indentation-based syntax distinguishes code blocks and dictates how different parts of the code interact with each other.
To grasp control flow, you can think of it as a series of decisions and repetitions that guide the program from start to finish. For instance, an "if" statement allows the program to choose a path based on a condition: if the condition is true, a block of code executes; otherwise, it is skipped. In Python, the scope of this decision-making is defined by indentation.
Similarly, loops enable the program to repeat a block of code multiple times. A "for" loop iterates over a sequence (like a list or range), while a "while" loop continues as long as a condition remains true. Indentation in these loops indicates which statements are part of the loop body.
Understanding how indentation controls scope helps us write clean, readable code and avoid common errors or unexpected behaviors due to incorrect nesting of code blocks.
